AMMAN, 9 March 2015 (Reliefweb): Under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Rym Ali (af Jordan, red.), UNFPA launched a handbook on Reporting on Gender-Based Violence in the Syria Crisis to help journalists better understand issues surrounding gender-based violence (GBV) and to write about it more effectively and sensitively.
During the event, Her Royal Highness Princess Rym Ali emphasized the significant impact the media has on shaping society. “Journalists have an important role to play in preventing and responding to violence and advocating for women rights. They have a professional obligation to seek and report the truth at the same time an ethical obligation to minimize harm.”
Medierne kan give kvinderne en stemme
The media can amplify Syrian women’s voices, counteract myths, and stimulate dialogue and action” said Daniel Baker, UNFPA Regional Humanitarian Advisor on behalf of Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, the UNFPA Executive Director.
UNFPA aims to deliver a survivor-centered approach to addressing gender-based violence in all parts of its programme, including supporting the media to cover GBV. The aim of the handbook is to help media professionals shine a stronger light on human rights violations, leading to greater support and services for GBV survivors.
Skal garantere sikkerhed, og værdighed
The handbook is the first comprehensive collection of practical tips for journalists on how to report on GBV in the context of Syria crisis, building upon internationally recognised ethical principles.
It gives an overview of techniques to guarantee the safety, confidentiality and dignity of survivors, their families and communities. It includes terms, ethical questions and practical concerns associated with covering GBV, as well as an overview of some of the organisations involved in both combatting GBV and providing support services for survivors.
Udviklet sammen med journalister
The handbook was developed by UNFPA in collaboration with a selective group of journalists and experts in the area of GBV and the media and with the financial support of the United Kingdoms Department for International Development (DFID). It will be distributed in the six countries affected by Syria crisis and will be used as to train journalists.
“We believe that journalists have a very powerful role in raising awareness and fighting GBV, because they not only report but also help shape public opinion and perceptions,” Baker added.
