Verdensbanken kalder Mozambique en afrikansk succes – en melding, der kan forekomme ironisk efter de voldsomme uroligheder i hovedstaden Maputo i dagene 1.-3. september, hvor folk protesterede mod prisstigninger på brød, energi og vand.
Mozambique er placeret på toppen af listen over “African Successes” i en nylig, men udateret artikel på Verdensbankens blog “Africa Can End Poverty” skrevet af Shanta Devarajan, World Bank Chief Economist for Africa.
Han skriver blandt andet:
“A key driver of economic expansion was the government’s pro-growth economic policies: sound monetary and fiscal policies to promote overall macroeconomic stability; lowering of restrictions on competition, such as price controls and inefficient monopolies; high levels of public investment in post-war reconstruction and infrastructure rehabilitation… Sustained, broad-based growth has helped to substantially reduce income poverty. …Access to services has increased and human development outcomes have improved.”
