Millions of people around the world have been driven into poverty by the global economic downturn, says World Bank President Robert Zoellick.
Speaking in Mexico on Wednesday, Zoellick estimated the economic crisis has impoverished 60 million people. The World Bank chief also warned that the recovery from the global recession is still fragile.
– While we see the world economy recovering, it is still uncertain. There are still frailties out there, Zoellick noted.
Mr Zoellick said that while the world economy is undergoing recovery, governments still face the spectre of uncertainty and volatility as he estimated that …in Latin America alone, up to 10 million were pushed into abject (dyb) poverty.
Zoellick at the same occasion announ-ced agreements on loans for Mexico totaling 800 million US dollar for development, infrastructure and cleaner transportation programs.
