Verdensbanken: fortsat støtte til Zanzibar

World Bank President, Paul Wolfowitz, has pledged continued support to Zanzibar’s economic revival programs reports the World Bank press review monday.

Wolfowitz gave the pledge during talks with Zanzibar President Amani Abeid Karume held at the State House Saturday. The World Bank president was impressed with the manner the isles government was working towards socio-economic development at all levels, especially at the grassroot level. … The World Bank president said they felt it necessary to continue supporting Zanzibar’s development efforts.

Wolfowitz further said that Zanzibar had scored impressive development in the education sector insisting that education must be given a top priority as the key component to development in any given nation.

Tanzania has been described as being on the right track for becoming one of the middle income countries by the year 2025 in development. The remarks were made in Dar es Salaam on Friday by Wolfowitz in Dar es Salaam. He commended the country for using foreign aid effectively for the intended drive towards the Millennium Development Goals, indicating the seriousness and determination for accelerating its pace to greater economic development achievements.

In a separate piece, African News Dimension (South Africa, 07/16) reports that “the Tanzania Gender Networking Program (TGNP) called upon Wolfowitz to spearhead immediate debt cancellation for Tanzania and all African countries. The call also urged the World Bank president to abolish all forms of conditional ties attached to its lending to Africa in general and Tanzania in particular.
