Job: Global Roving MHPSS Advisor



Danish Red Cross (DRC) is looking for an experienced humanitarian to join our mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) team and work to ensure that people affected by disasters and crises live healthy lives and have capacities to promote, achieve and sustain mental health and psychosocial well-being.

About the position  
The Global Roving MHPSS Advisor will support the DRC’s strategic ambitions on MHPSS in emergencies, act as surge to undertake rapid deployments to DRC country operations and for Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement multilateral deployments (ICRC and IFRC) in humanitarian crises. The Global Roving MHPSS Advisor is expected to deploy on surge missions for up to 6-7 months per year to humanitarian contexts (armed conflicts, disasters, and other emergencies). Deployments can be both bilateral and multilateral (IFRC/ICRC). Mission length vary according to the needs, from one month to three months. In addition, the Global Roving MHPSS Advisor will provide technical support, including capacity-development, and quality assurance to DRC supported MHPSS emergency interventions in line with established technical standards, good practices, protocols, and guidelines. 

Your main tasks include:

  • Undertake MHPSS surge/deployments to DRC country operations and for wider RCRC Movement actions including multilateral deployments with ICRC and IFRC.
  • Provide technical support and quality-assurance to DRC supported operations with a particular focus on MHPSS in Emergencies aspects, remotely or through field missions (assessments, program design, monitoring, supervision, reviews).
  • Support capacity-development and training of staff (DRC and partners) in MHPSS in Emergencies to ensure that DRC can develop and implement quality MHPSS interventions that follow industry standards and best practice (e.g. trauma informed care within emergency health, support to roll out the PFA for complex reactions, co-facilitate roster training). 
  • Support development of relevant tools and guidance notes to meet operational needs (e.g. quality assurance tools and systems). 
  • Document and communicate effective interventions and methods of MHPSS in emergencies for learning within the organization.
  • Support the development of relevant strategies, policies, position papers, and technical frameworks with a specific focus on MHPSS in Emergencies.
  • Explore opportunities for new partnerships to further develop and promote DRC MHPSS in emergency interventions, within emergency health, and disaster and crisis response, and support resource mobilization.

The Global Roving MHPSS Advisor is a member of the MHPSS team in the Technical Quality & Impact Unit in the International Department. The team comprises technical advisors supporting the strategic ambitions of DRC within MHPSS and ensures that the requisite capacities are in place to provide timely and relevant assistance to DRC supported operations. The Global Roving MHPSS Advisor is also a member of the MHPSS technical team, which comprises both technical advisors at HQ and MHPSS specialists in DRC country offices.

The Global Roving MHPSS Advisor works under the line management of the Head of Unit and has a technical line to the MHPSS Team Lead. The Global Roving MHPSS Advisor works closely with the Global MHPSS in Emergencies Advisor and other relevant colleagues at DRC HQ, regional, and country offices as well as with the International Federation of the Red Cross Red Crescent (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and National Society (HNSs) staff and volunteers in countries of operation/mission. When providing support to the DRC operations in specific countries, the Global Roving MHPSS Advisor will report to the DRC Country Managers on security and other issues pertaining to the mission in point, and coordinates closely and flexibly with the guidance of the country team. 

Your profile:

Professional:
•    Hold an academic degree at master level in psychology, social sciences or related field or equivalent experience in MHPSS.
•    At least 5 years’ experience with MHPSS in emergency interventions in protracted and acute crisis (armed conflict and disasters).
•    Experience of working for the International RCRC Movement in humanitarian contexts and conflict settings. 
•    Ability to cope with short missions and a lot of uncertainties (emergency deployments).
•    Demonstrated experience and skills in supporting local partner organisations in developing strategies, approaches and tools related to MHPSS in emergency.
•    Proven experience and strong skills in project management, project proposal development, reporting, assessments, reviews, and evaluations of MHPSS in emergency interventions
•    Experience in developing training materials and facilitating trainings of teams from diverse backgrounds.
•    Illustrated experience on mainstreaming cross-cutting issues such as protection, gender and inclusion in emergency response operations.
•    Experience of and commitment to working through systems of community engagement and accountability. 
•    Well-acquainted with international standards and tools on MHPSS in emergencies, both Movement resources and non-Movement Resources.

•    Be flexible and able to work with people from diverse backgrounds. 
•    Strong self-management skills, a high level of personal efficiency and the ability to balance and prioritize multiple urgent or important tasks.
•    Flexibility to travel on short notice to the response bilateral and multilateral missions or elsewhere for events and meetings. 
•    Willingness to undertake fieldwork under basic and challenging conditions.
•    Fluency in English and French; knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.

Salary and employment conditions will comply with Danish Red Cross’s collective bargain agreement with HK and AC depending on your experience and qualifications. The position is located at the Danish Red Cross headquarters in Copenhagen with extensive (up to 6-7 months a year) travels and missions. The position is a full-time position of 37 hours per week. Salary is between DKK 41,300 – 47,600 per month including pension, and according to qualifications and experience. It is an HQ position, and the salary package does not include family or housing allowances. The position is 12 months with the possibility of  extension.
