I am Belmaya / A woman’s lens into her own life
This semi-autobiographical documentary chronicles how young Nepali filmmaker Belmaya uses a camera to empower and free herself in a society dominated by her husband and family. Born a Dalit, the lowest caste, and orphaned at a young age, Belmaya gets a first glimpse through the camera when she participates in a photo project in her girls‘ home as a teenager.
Many years later, now a young, uneducated mother trapped in an abusive marriage, Belmaya gets to pick up a camera again to learn documentary filmmaking – and uses her newfound voice to challenge society and push for access to education and a better future for girls like her daughter. I am Belmaya shows in striking images how one woman takes charge of her own life and changes her and her daughter’s fate amidst tough circumstances and gender discrimination.
