Fokus på Somalia og Afghanistan

Diaspora groups are increasingly recognised as agents of change in conflict and post-conflict settings.

Not only do remittances (penge, folk sender tilbage til hjemlandet) triple official development aid – reaching 436 billion dollars in 2014.

Migrants and refugees also contribute to development and relief through diaspora organisations with projects focusing on education, health, civil society and the private sector amongst other things.

At this DIIS seminar, we examine the role of diaspora organisations as development actors operating in fragile settings, with particular focus on Somalia and Afghanistan – two important recipients of Danish development and humanitarian aid.

Likewise, Somali and Afghan refugees are dispersed all over the world, forming large diaspora groups.

We will debate how development aid agencies support diaspora organisations and the potentials and challenges involved from the perspective of researchers, grant-makers, and diaspora organisations themselves.

The roundtable speakers will address the following issues:

  • The current state of diaspora engagement in development
  • Challenges and opportunities of diaspora engagement in fragile situations
  • Recommendations to future policy interventions

The seminar is a part of a study on Somali and Afghan diaspora organisations that DIIS carries out for the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of the Tendencies in Development Policies grant.
