Increase in World Bank Investigations into Corruption In Fiscal Year 2007

The number of completed investigations on corruption and fraud (svindel) in projects financed by the World Bank around the world rose 25 percent during fiscal year 2007 in relation to the previous year, the Department of Institutional Integrity (INT)] reported Wednesday.

The increase was the result of greater cooperation between the Bank and other international multilateral institutions and governments, according to the new “Annual Integrity Report: Improving Development Outcomes” released by the unit.

In total, the World Bank closed 301 cases of investigations into corruption and fraud during FY 2007, between July 2006 and June of this year, investigating 60 more than the previous year. The cases, which also included allegations of misconduct by staff of the Bank, were investigated by INT.

After the close of the year in June, three international firms were barred from tendering to the World Bank: Nestor Pharmaceuticals and Pure Pharma for three years because of collusive (hemmelige/fordægtige) practices in connection with a child health project in India – and Lahmeyer International for seven years because of corrupt activities in connection with the huge Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
