The World Bank warned Kenya on Friday to tighten control of spending and ensure expenditure was more focused on fighting poverty or risk losing the banks help in coordinating future aid from donors.
Kenya has asked the World Bank to coordinate its requests for future budget support credit with other international donors through a so-called donors consultative group meeting, reports the World Bank press review Monday.
The last such meeting held late last year saw donors pledge 4,1 billion US dollar over the next three years, but disbursement has been slow partly because of donors concerns about how their funds were being used.
The World Banks country director Makhtar Diop said the bank would continue the coordinating role only if the government assured the bank that budget allocations would focus on fighting poverty. More than half of Kenyas population of 30 million live below the poverty line.
