The World Bank said Tuesday that 89 million more people would live under the international poverty line in 2010 due to the unprecedented economic crisis.

World Bank Vice President and Chief Economist Justin Yifu Lin said those people would join the under-poverty-line group next year which already has 1,4 billion people.

– In order to fight poverty, developing countries should have economies “similar to those in developed countries”, Lin said, adding that in a time of crisis developing countries are able to have a “more proactive” monetary policy, since the space to improve the economy is greater.

– During an economic crisis, governments of developing countries must be facilitators of growth, Lin said. Governments should offer stimulus measures to aid infrastructure and create sustainable government.
