Somalia is at a crucial juncture (skilleve). The current government’s mandate is ending and parliamentary and presidential elections are planned for August-September 2016. In 2012, when President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud took office, it was clear that ending the war against the islamistic al-Shabaab and building state institutions within one election period would be extremely challenging. Today we face a fragile security situation in Somalia – although improved since 2012 due to efforts of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM). In parallel to the security situation in the country, a political process of federalization is currently unfolding where significant progress has been made in recent months. However, it is inevitably a long-term process to establish Somalia’s governance system again, 25 years after it collapsed.
To discuss the prospects and challenges of Somalia’s elections, DIIS and the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs are honored to present Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mohamed Omer Arteh and Minister of Internal Security, Abdirisak Omar Mohamed.
Their presentations will be followed by comments and perspectives from Ambassador and Head of Centre for Global Politics and Security, Ms Charlotte Slente, from the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Tobias Hagmann and Peter Albrecht from DIIS. |
