Two men set themselves on fire outside a famous temple in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa on Sunday, Chinese state media said according to BBC online Monday.
One of the men died and the other “survived with injuries”. The self-immolations (selvbrændingerne) are thought to be the first in Lhasa and the second inside Tibet.
For more than a year over 30 Tibetans – mostly monks and nuns – have been burning themselves alive. Many have died. Most cases have taken place in Tibetan areas of western Sichuan province.
The authorities will be concerned because it occurred despite the intense security operation to stop this kind of protest. They will also worry because this gruesome campaign has now spread to Lhasa.
The two men were believed to have been among a group of youths who had gathered to protest against Chinese rule, said a report from Radio Free Asia (RFA) .
China’s leaders blame the Dalai Lama, the Tibetans’ exiled spiritual leader, for inciting the self-immolations and encouraging separatism.
Activist groups and the Tibetan government-in-exile say the self-immolations are protests against tight Chinese control of the region and religious repression.
