Background

With November 8 fast approaching, questions abound as to what US foreign policy will look like under the next presidency. The stakes certainly seem high given the enormous stylistic and, more importantly, substantive differences between the two presidential candidates.

However, irrespective of whether the White House is inhabited by a Democrat or a Republican next year, each candidate appears to be not only far more protectionist than Barack Obama, but also much more of a hardliner on various foreign and security policy issues.

To provide an overview of the upcoming US presidential elections, DIIS, in collaboration with the American Embassy in Copenhagen, has invited Nicholas Kralev, one of the most knowledgeable American experts on the subject.

Over the past couple of decades, Mr. Kralev has witnessed firsthand the conduct of American diplomacy around the world while accompanying Hillary Clinton and three other US Secretaries of State.

He will explore the impact of the US elections on American foreign policy and the international system, as well as lessons from the media coverage of the campaign.

He will also discuss how each candidate would affect the conduct of US diplomacy in Europe and around the world. In addition, he will provide a historical look at how politics and partisanship have influenced US foreign policy in the last several decades.
