Background

The global landscape of development finance is rapidly changing. Old actors such as the World Bank and IMF are challenged by new development banks spearheaded by emerging economic powers.

Meanwhile bilateral donors in the Nordic countries and elsewhere are looking for new roles and identities, as attention turns to alternative sources of financing for development.

What do these changes mean for the roles of old and new development actors and for the Nordic countries in particular? What are the implications for multilateral development finance?

Are new development actors such as China really so influential? And where does this leave the Nordic countries and their development agencies?

The seminar will discuss these topics based on a recent book by Per Øyvind Bastøe and Stein Hansen on the challenges and roles of development financing in the 21stcentury.

The authors will present their findings and suggestions, followed by plenary discussion and comments from DIIS researchers.
