Paneldebat: Oprindelige folks forsvarere i fare

Environment and human rights defenders are dying, being attacked and criminalized all over the world. This is happening at an increasing alarming rate. In 2017, over 400 people have been killed while protecting their community’s land or natural resources. Approximately half of these were indigenous peoples.

The panel debate will discuss why in particular and increasingly indigenous peoples are being killed or persecuted. The panelists will present the key drivers behind this global phenomenon, bring forward context-specific cases and explore some measures that need to be taken to protect indigenous defenders. The panelists will also look specifically at how can academia be a part of the solution.

The panel will be facilitated by the International Work Group for Indigenous Affairs (IWGIA)
