Seminar: Fremtrædende Kina-forsker ser frem mod Kinas 19. folkekongres

ThinkChina and Danish-Chinese Business Forum are proud to present renowned China scholar, Professor David Shambaugh, who will give a ChinaTalks lecture on September 27th on the upcoming 19th party congress that will take place in Beijing on October 18th. Professor Shambaugh will amongst other things explore what the congress will mean for president Xi Jinping's hold on power. 

Abstract

The Chinese Communist Party approaches its 19th Congress this autumn and questions abound about the political strength and staying power of Xi Jinping. Who will compose the next Politburo, China’s top leadership? What will be their policy orientations? More deeply, though, there exist many questions about China's internal and external policy orientation, and whether the post-Congress leadership will be able to restart a variety of reforms that have stalled since the 18th Congress in 2012. There are also questions about the quality of the Communist Party itself, following five years of an intensive anti-corruption campaign, ideological tightening, and a severe crackdown on the public sphere in China. Will China stay on its current "hard authoritarian" path, or might it shift back in a more liberal direction? These and other pressing questions will be explored in Professor Shambaugh's public lecture.

Om David Shambaugh

Professor David Shambaugh is an influential international authority on contemporary China and international relations of Asia. He is the Gaston Sigur Professor of Asian Studies, Political Science & International Affairs, and Director of the China Policy Program, at George Washington University in Washington, DC. Professor Shambaugh is a widely published author–having published more than 30 books, most recently China's Future and The China Reader: Rising Power (both 2016). He is the former Editor of The China Quarterly, Reader in Chinese Politics at SOAS in London, and Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington.

Practical information

Professor Shambaugh will speak for approximately 45 minutes followed by Q&A from the audience. The session is moderated by Professor Jørgen Delman, China studies, University of Copenhagen.
