LONDON, 7 October 2013 (Amnesty International): “Shell has manipulated oil spill investigations in Nigeria, with the company’s claims on oil pollution in the region deeply suspect and often untrue, said Amnesty International and the Centre for Environment, Human Rights and Development (CEHRD).

A new report published Thursday uncovers specific cases in which Shell has wrongly reported the cause of oil spills, the volume of oil spilt, or the extent and adequacy of clean up measures.

“Shell is being disingenuous about the devastation caused by its Niger Delta operations. This new evidence shows that Shell’s claims about the oil spills cannot be trusted,” stated Audrey Gaughran, Director of Global Issues at Amnesty International, adding:

New analysis from an independent expert found that so-called official investigation reports into the cause of oil spills in the Niger Delta can be “very subjective, misleading and downright false.”

“Shell looks to blame others based on investigation reports that, in some cases, amount to nothing more than dodgy (lukkede /udspekulerede) dossiers,” said Styvn Obodoekwe, Director of Programmes at CEHRD.”

FAKTA

• There have been more than 600 oil spills in the Niger Delta between January and September 2013 and more than 2,500 between 2008 and 2012.

• Of the ones in 2013, 471 were from Agip and approximately 140 from shell. Of those that took place in the period 2008-2012, between 788 and 1.000 were from Shell facilities; 1.690 from Agip and a small number from other operators.

• Companies blame most spills on sabotage and theft of oil but evidence shows corrosion (rust m.v.), equipment failure and under reporting are also causes.
