Nye veje for journalistik og kommunikation om udviklingslande

Laurits Holdt

The Timbuktu Fund welcomes you to a two day conference, Communicating Worlds, in Copenhagen with focus on how we communicate about development and the global South. We offer inspiration, knowledge and provocation in return for your ideas and opinions. The Timbuktu Fund takes its name from the ancient Timbuktu, and its enlightened, open and inquisitive society oriented towards the outside world. This is also our point of departure for this conference.

Time and place

3-4 April 2016
The Academy for Untamed Creativity (Akademiet for Utæmmet Kreativitet), Enghavevej 82 B, DK-2450 Copenhagen SV

The conference is for you, who:

  • Work with communication relating to development and the global South;
  • Question communication and its impact on perceptions, values, attitudes and decision-making;
  • Are looking for inspiration, alternatives and diversity;
  • Are open to new ideas and opinions – and willing to share your own.

We aim at composing the two days with a mix of international and Danish inputs. Our ambition is to provide a series of inspirational talks, where speakers share experience, research and ideas on the topics related to our theme. Of course, with space for debate and network – we find it important that our audience also gets the chance to meet new people.

Hence, the second day will include a deeper focus on actors operating in Denmark, who are working with communication of development and the global South. The last part of the day will focus directly on network and exchange of ideas, opinions and experience.

Please note that we screen people who sign up in order to be able to compose the most apt audience. We are in particular aiming at a wide diversity of work place and job type/experience. Please, see further information under ‘sign up’.

Background

The Timbuktu Fund is concerned that if we ignore what is happening in the world, and if we fail to take responsibility to find solutions to critical issues, it will influence how Danes deal with the world as well as how the world wants to deal with us.

We are in particularly concerned about the intersection of development and global affairs. We believe communication plays an increasingly significant role within this context. Hence, we question how we can collaborate to create and sustain global relationships; What does it bring forward, and what effort it takes?

We believe a majority of the Danes are interested in what goes on in the world, we may nevertheless have to scrutinize how we communicate in order to turn this interest into longer-lasting engagement and support. On the positive side we see many new initiatives, where people are proposing different methods and models to establish alternatives to the mainstream.

Therefore, we would like to challenge and inspire actors who in one way or the other are engaged in communication with and about the global South to network, exchange and – maybe – try out new ways.
